5 Vegan and Vegetarian Friendly Places to Eat in Austin
You Don't Have to Be a Vegan to Enjoy the Food
Counter Culture
120 E. North Loop
Austin, TX 78751
Counter Culture is a small, humble little place that sells food out of one of those portable wagons you see stationed on the street corners. Although it's small and you really have no choice but to take your food to go, the food is well worth it. Counter Culture caters to vegans so their food is very vegan friendly. Not only is the food good but it's also affordable, of course I wouldn't expect it to be expensive considering how it's being sold out of a wagon. They only seem to accept cash though so make sure you have some in your wallet if you plan to visit Counter Culture. There is a shaded area with a picnic table if you prefer to eat close by or just want to stick around for seconds. They offer a variety of tasty sandwiches and salads to choose from.
Borboleta
1221 West 6th Street
Austin, TX 78703
If finer dining is more of your style than check out Borboleta. This restaurant focuses on healthy, organic gourmet cuisine but tastes so much better than what most people will associated with healthy foods. Yes, I'm talking to all you fast food and process goodness lovers. Borboleta uses 100 percent organic ingredients and try to buy as much local produce as possible so that they leave a smaller carbon footprint. How great is that? Great, healthy, organic food and they're looking out for the environment. Did I mention how affordable this place is? Yes, hard to believe something with so many positives can be affordable, and they even have dessert. Organic dessert can you imagine that?
Borboleta's dishes are vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, kosher, soy-free, trans fat-free and they also offer takeout if you'd rather not dine in.
Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse
1501 South First
Austin, Texas 78704
Nothing screams Austin much like Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse. Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse has great food, affordable prices, coffee and beer and yes, it is vegan friendly as well. The atmosphere here is a very laid back and friendly one. It's like a home away from home. All of their items are priced under $10 and their coffee is organic and fair trade. Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse isn't nearly as fancy as Borboleta but if hanging out for lunch and kicking back with some friends and a beer is more up your alley this is the place to do it. They have a variety of sammiches, tacos and salads to choose from.
Cheer Up Charlie's
1104 E 6th St
Austin, TX 78702
Cheer Up Charlie's is another one of those small places that sell food out of a wagon. Cheer Up Charlie's has a rotating menu so it's hard to pin down what they offer, and I can't seem to gather much information off of their website. They do offer a variety of cool drinks, handmade chocolates and sammiches to choose from. The price is very affordable as to be expect with this type of eatery.
Titaya's Thai Cuisine
5501 N. Lamar BLVD. #C101
Austin, TX 78751
If you prefer Asian cuisine than try Titaya's Thai Cuisine. Although Titaya's Thai Cuisine isn't strictly vegan or vegetarian like the others it does offer dishes that are vegan and vegetarian friendly. Thai food in general consists of a lot of meatless dishes packed with a variety of vegetables and tofu. Most of the flavor comes from the way the food is cooked along with a variety of spices used. You'll never find bland Thai food that's for sure. Their pricing is fairly standard for an Asian restaurant and they do offer spice levels, as in how spicy you prefer a dish.
These five vegan friendly eateries are just a few that Austin has to offer. There are so many more places out there to try but I've chosen to focus on these five due to pricing and customer feedbacks. Whether you're vegan or not definitely check out these places.
