5 Vegetarian Friendly Places to Eat in Houston, Texas

You Don't Have to Be a Health Nut to Be a Vegetarian or Vegan

Alexis Valentine
Being a vegan or vegetarian can be difficult, especially when it comes to eating out. You're limited to a handful of options and it's often salads or pasta dishes. Living in Houston has many advantages and one advantage is the diverse cuisine available. Many people assume Austin is the best place for vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants because of it's reputation for being in-your-face green. People often forget that there is quite a large Middle Eastern, Indian and Mediterranean community in Houston which means there's bound to be many vegetarian friendly restaurants in the city. You don't have to be green or a health junky to be a vegetarian. The following restaurants are just five vegetarian friendly places to eat. I chose them based on variety, price and customer ratings.

Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine
912 Westheimer Rd Houston, Texas 77006

Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine is a restaurant that also caters. As the name implies this is a Mediterranean restaurant that offers plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices like hummus, hot vegetables, a variety of salads and sandwiches, just to name a few. Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine is also inexpensive and a good place for large groups of people.

Baba Yega Restaurant
2607 Grant Street Houston, Texas 77006

If Mediterranean food isn't for you there's always Baba Yega Restaurant. They offer a variety of American style dishes and is beautifully designed with a garden, koi pond and a waterfall. They have plenty of vegetarian dishes to choose from like vegatable pommodoro, a variety of vegetarian sandwiches and several vegetarian burgers. There's no need to stick to soups and salads anymore, but they also offer those items too. Baba Yega does have a happy hour, so check that out, as well as outdoor seating, a full bar and private rooms. The price for this place is average in comparison to most restaurants in the city.

Chipotle Mexican Grill
2027 S Shepherd Dr
Suite A
Houston, Texas 77019

Craving Mexican? Then check out Chipotle Mexican Grill. Believe it or not they're actually a pretty vegetarian friendly restaurant too. They have a variety of tacos, burritos and burrito bowls to choose from that's made with ingredients that are vegetarian friendly. Like many Mexican places Chipotle Mexican Grill offers great food for cheap prices.

Coliseum Italian Restaurant and Bakery
16608 El Camino Real
Houston, Texas 77062

Coliseum Italian Restaurant and Bakery is a great place for vegans and vegetarians if you're craving Italian or looking for a vegetarian friendly bakery. It's a buffet so the dining experiences is very casual, kid friendly and inexpensive but it still offers authentic Italian food. Coliseum Italian Restaurant and Bakery also offers carry out and are available to cater weddings.

Field of Green's
2320 W. Alabama Street Houston, Texas 77098 713-533-0029

Last but not least, there's Field of Green's. The pricing for this place is affordable to average compared to other restaurants. I don't believe there's many items on their menu that's priced over $10. They serve American style cuisine, everything from soup, salads, sandwiches and more. Field of Green's caters to both vegetarians and vegans, so everything on their menu can be made vegan if desired. Although it's a fairly small place they can still accommodate a large party. Field of Green's prides itself on offering the largest choices of vegetarian and vegan dishes that is healthy and organic. They also offer something called macrobiotics, and from my research it sounds like a diet that's based mostly on whole grains and fresh vegetables.

If you're visiting Houston or plan on moving here and don't think that you can keep up a healthy lifestyle while eating out, think again. These were just five vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants there are so much more around Houston.
