5 Video Games Releasing in Summer 2010

Jennifer Amlie
In the video game industry, summer is usually a wasteland. The releases often amount to little more then rushed games based off movies. Fortunately, due to some delays, the summer of 2010 looks exciting for gamers. Here are five video games to play when it's too hot outside.

Metroid other M
Being released this summer on August 31, is the newest Metroid game. This one takes place in between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. Gamers play as Samus exploring a derelict space station. The game promises to delve into the bounty hunter's past. Players will need to switch between first and third person views. Other M is a side scrolling game, but with lots of discoveries and items to be found. It is a Wii exclusive and is rated T for Teens.

Dead Rising 2
Also releasing on August 31 is Dead Rising 2. Chuck Greene is a survivor in the zombie apocalypse, desperate to save his infected daughter with Zombex. Chuck can use a variety of unconventional weapons to fight the hordes of the undead. There is mutiplayer called "Terror is Reality," modeled after American Gladiator type shows. Up to four players at a time can fight with specialized equipment and weapons. A free roaming co-op mode is also said to be included in the game. It is rated M for Mature and will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Toy Story 3
While many video games based on movies are horrible, Toy Story 3 looks promising. The game has two modes, Story and Toy Box. Story mode has players navigating obstacles, blasting aliens, and figuring out how the toys can work together to reach human sized items. Toy Box mode is more of a sandbox, free style type game. Players start in a somewhat barren town. Through missions they can buy new playsets. This mode also offers exploration, item collecting, and interacting with the Toy Story characters. It will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, PSP, and DS. June 18 is the release date.

Naughty Bear
Ever want to play a video game as a stuffed teddy bear bent on revenge? Releasing on June 15, Naughty Bear gives players that chance. The goal of the game is to cause as much trauma, anguish, and pain as you can to fellow stuffed bears. Scoring is based on how well you torment, scare, and kill. There are costumes and abilities to unlock. You can rank up to level 50. The game has 4 multiplayer modes. The ESRB rating is pending. Naughty Bear will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Mafia 2
The dark, gritty sequel to Mafia The City of Lost Heaven releases on August 24. The game takes place between 1945 and 1955. It follows the rise of Vito from his start into a crime family. Mafia 2 is a sandbox game with 10 square miles of map. There are 50 vehicles and plenty of guns to use. The game boasts new controls and a revamped checkpoint system. It is rated M and will be available for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

The summer of 2010 is shaping up to a good one for gamers. Just remember that release dates can change at anytime. Hopefully, these games will not be pushed back into Fall or 2011.

Excellent reviews. I am looking for good games for the Wii. Other than the workout and teen games, little has so far sparked our attention. Super mario Kart is good, but I still found the palyability of the SNES version better in many ways.

Blur comes out in a few weeks and looks like it will be awesome. I played the demo on Xbox Live until I maxed out the level cap. Can't wait.
