5 Ways to Beat Your Internet Addiction While at College This Year

Idalia Benavides
Are you a person who loves to get online any time possible? Is the time available for you to get online endless? Well if you're headed to college and this is how you are, then prepare to have a huge internet addiction when you get to a place where free internet is available even in the restrooms. In this article I am going to talk about 5 ways in which you can beat the internet addiction that may or may not hit you this college semester.

- Get busy with something else
The way to not be on the internet so much is to give yourself something else to do. If you can go outside and work out or if you can hang out at a place with other people where using the internet isn't available, do it! This will help you to forget about being online and if you do these activities consistently you will surely not be falling into the internet addiction.

- Don't think about who's online
The more you think about who's online and what you can say to them or what you can be doing the better. Try not to think that everyone's on Facebook, MySpace, or on their messengers wondering where you're at. If you feel like talking to someone and they're close by, it's better to just go visit them or hang out somewhere with them. Try not to lose face to face interaction with people because you think talking through the internet is better.

- Get in the habit of checking email only twice a day
This can be a cause for internet dependency. If you're checking your email more than 5 times a day it's not good. Try checking your email once when you first get online in the morning or afternoon, and then once when you're logging off. It's also helpful to use an email client such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Eudora to help minimize the whole having to check 3 or 4 different emails a day at separate websites.

- Don't leave your computer on all day
If your computer is left on the whole day then it's easier to stay or get on there for you. If you turn it off then you are most likely to not turn it on until you need to. Try to keep it off or on standby for most of the day and only use it when you need to. If you can go a couple of days without using it that's better. You should also think about timing your internet sessions.

- Use paper calendars, to-do lists, and other things like that instead of having them online
A lot of college students have their planners online. This can make you really depend on the computer or internet and that can lead to a sort of internet addiction. Try to keep paper calendars, to-do lists, homework lists and phone books also. This will help you to have everything at hand when you need it without having to get online to view it.
