5 Ways to Boost Your Vocabulary

Quick and Easy Ways to Extent Your Vocabulary

Shilpa Rao
Words are the most important tool we have; they can persuade, inform and entertain. When used correctly, the right word can influence attitudes and even entire nations. Enrich your vocabulary with little effort by following these simple tips.

1. Read widely

Read as much as possible, from newspapers to books and everything in between. They contain a variety of vocabulary and will give you an idea about when and how to use certain words. Whenever you come across a word you don't know, try to work out its meaning from the context. Sometimes, the prefix or suffix can hint at the general meaning; prefixes such as dis- or un- suggest a negative meaning, while sur- and super- generally have more positive implications. Then, look up the word in a dictionary and make a note of its usage as well; most words have multiple meanings which are often changed by its usage. Knowing how a word's usage affects its meaning will help you know when to use it the most effectively.

2. Use a thesaurus

Everybody knows the importance of using a dictionary, but it is well to remember that a thesaurus is just as valuable. It can refine your vocabulary by providing richer, more descriptive words. Substitute overused adjectives such as 'nice' with much more vivid ones, like 'charming,' 'amiable' or 'delightful.' A thesaurus can help you find a more expressive - and therefore more apt - word and using this invaluable lexicon regularly will boost your own vocabulary immeasurably.

3. Make it a game

Word games and puzzles are fun, challenging methods of improving vocabulary. Crosswords are a particularly effective vocabulary booster because of their sometimes cryptic clues. There is a wide variety of word games available for all ability levels in magazines and books, but the power of the internet is such that you can find a plethora of puzzles with just one search. Even spending as little amount of time as fifteen minutes each day on a crossword can improve your word knowledge; some particularly effective games and puzzles can be found here.

4. Use your words

Learn a new word every day and take every opportunity to use it. Whether it is in conversation, a blog or even an email, put your new word to good use. The more times you use it, the more accustomed you will become to it and soon, your new word will naturally fit into your vocabulary.

5. Find the best word

Think about how to say what you want. Remember, the length of the word is irrelevant! The perfect word is not necessarily the longest, but the most expressive. Similarly, if you find yourself using five words when one will do, you may not be conveying your thoughts effectively. The fewer the words, the more concise you will be. Using less, but more evocative, words is far better than using five nondescript ones.

Having an extensive vocabulary is all about practice. Finding new words is just as important as implementing them whenever possible. Take a little time to consult a dictionary or thesaurus and to play games; you will find that augmenting your vocabulary is easier and quicker than you think.
