5 Ways to Be a Great Bridesmaid Long Distance

Katherine Huether
I am currently the maid of honor at my sister's wedding. However, I am living oversees and she is in New Hampshire. The distance gap is considerable but I've found that even though I can't necessarily go from place to place looking at cakes, there still is a lot that I can do from where I am.

So, I thought I'd put together a list of my favorite strategies for keeping in touch and participating in the wedding planning despite the distance.

1. Sign Up for Skype

This is the best tool there is. Skype is free and it allows you to see the person. This means that they can hold up color samples, favor ideas, and other stuff so you can see them and give your opinion. If you have an internet stick and can access the internet while your bride is dress shopping, you can even "go along" while she's looking for her dress.

2. Don't Complain if You Don't Like Something

This is a hard lesson to learn. First of all, it isn't your wedding and you don't have the final say. Secondly, even though you are able to participate through social networking and by using tools like Skype it isn't the same as being there. Don't get too attached to the decisions and you will have a great experience.

3. Make Phone Calls

You can also help out by making phone calls for the bride. This is something that can be done anywhere. If you live oversees then look for a phone plan that allows you to make a lot of phone calls to the US fairly inexpensively. Same goes for long distance calls in the US and North America as well. My current phone plan is outstanding for this. Skype also has inexpensive computer to land line calling rates.

4. Stay in Touch with the Bride and Other Bridesmaids

Sometimes, all the bride and other bridesmaids needs is emotional support. You can be there for them without literally being in the room. Try to call the bridesmaids at least once a week to see how things are going and the bride every few days. Keep in mind that "calling" them on Skype also counts.

5. Try to Fly Home When Needed

I know, rates are expensive so it isn't always realistic. As a minimum, however, you should be there at least a week in advance for the wedding and also for the bridal shower. Try to make one other trip home to help with the planning. If not, a lot can be accomplished online.

Just because you aren't physically present doesn't mean you can't be the best bridesmaid you can be. As long as you stay in touch and help make crucial decisions, you'll still be able to get the job done despite the distance.
