Unfortunately, since September 11th, it is now against the law to simply leave the airplane without the permission of the airline. You are essentially at the mercy of the airlines. Here are a few ways to keep cool under the absolute worst airline conditions.
1. Pack your carry-on bag carefully.
There are a lot of new restrictions on carry-on bags, but you can still pack it well. Include a deck of playing cards, especially if you aren't traveling by yourself. In that way, if you are stuck for an extended period of time, you will always have something to do. In addition, if you love to write, a notebook can be a lifesaver. Of course, a couple of good books will keep you occupied as well. None of those items take up too much room and will keep you occupied for hours. A few snacks wouldn't hurt either. Food can become an issue if you are stuck on a runway for hours.
2. Be sure to stock up on drinks after you go through security.
While there are strict restrictions of liquids that you can take through the security gates, you can still stock up once you are through security. It would be a good idea to purchase a couple bottles of pop or bottled water for your trip. You never know what the food and drink situation will be if you are stuck on an airplane for an extended period of time. Airlines appear to be operating on a logic all their own.
3. Dress in layers.
If you are stuck on a runway during a snowstorm, as was the case this past week in New York City, there is a chance that the airplane may lose power while you are sitting there. This occurred on a flight destined for Cancun, Mexico. As the passengers sat on the runway in the middle of a snowstorm without power, they had to open the door to the airplane in order to relieve people from the heat of all of those bodies crammed in their seats without air conditioning.
If you are prepared for any situation by dressing in layers, you will be better able to handle extreme heat or cold.
4. Reassure small children.
If you are traveling with small children, this nightmare scenario might be made even worse. As the parent, or the adult in charge, it is your job to reassure the children traveling with you. One of the best ways to do this is to answer their questions calmly and truthfully. In addition, by playing games with them and keeping them occupied, children will be made to feel more at ease.
5. Play games.
Playing games, any game, will help make the time go faster for both adults and children. It may seem silly at first, but after a while, you'll realize that there is no better way to pass the time.
By keeping these few tips in mind, you might just make a horrific experience a little less painful. Just don't expect an apology from the airlines.
