I realize that this is a touchy subject with many parents, but it seems to be the hot topic among many, with no signs of letting up any time soon. Being curious about this I decided to ask several parents how they felt, only to realize that it is a fifty percent split. Some parents think it's a great idea and others think it is not. One of the biggest comments I have heard, is that it could be due to a lack of rules, and discipline from parents. It seems that over the past few years it has only gotten worse. In response to all of the misbehaving children, many stores, restaurants, and even some movie theaters are creating kid free hours. Some are even going far enough to ban children all together. The reason simply being that some parents either tune out their children, or don't see any thing wrong with their behavior. Many restaurant owners have stated that there are several ways they would go about changing their policy. Below are several ways parents can help deter other business from banning children.
Set rules
First you can start by setting rules for your children when you go out. Of course this means that you have to have rules at home when you eat. For example instead of letting your young toddler wander around during dinner time, make them sit. This way they will be used to sitting when they are eating out. Even when you watch movies at home, you can help them to sit quietly. This will avoid the movie theater tantrums.
Instant correction needed
If your child does start to act out when you are out in a public setting, immediately correct the behavior. If they start to throw a tantrum, just get up and take them to the restroom, or outside. When they are ready to calm down and sit nice they can come back in. This may take a few minutes and may cause you to miss some of the movie, but it would really help others not to have their meal or movie interrupted.
Plan age appropriate activities
Let's face it there are some movies which are just not appropriate for very young children. If you have a two year old sitting for a two hour movie this may not be a good idea. Even if it is a cartoon that you think they will like. Most young toddlers have a very short attention span, so when planning your activities try to make sure that they are age appropriate.
Get help if you need it
If you feel overwhelmed when you visit the supermarket or go out to eat, than take some help. Sometimes just taking along an extra adult can prove to be helpful, especially on shopping trips. This way you can get your shopping done, and someone else can make sure your child behaves and does not disturb others.
Keep them busy
Young children who are kept busy will have an easier time behaving. If your child has a favorite book, or even enjoys coloring, bring this along. Whether you are eating out or going food shopping there are plenty of ways to keep little ones occupied. Even having an educational hand held video game will help. Just make sure to bring along headphones that are comfortable for your child so that the sound form the game does not disturb anyone else.
