5 Ways to Make a Room Look Better

Chad R. Herman
You walk into the same rooms day in and day out. You look at the same things and clean the same things. Sometimes a room just needs a change? But what? How can you easily and quickly change your blah room into an Ahhh room? There are 5 things that can make your room look 100% better, and they are all easy to do.

Put on some paint.

A new coat of paint always adds a new life to a room. It's almost like getting new clothes; it changes everything. The brighter the color the happier the mood. Most of the home improvement stores will teach you anything you want to know about painting. There are a lot of neat texture techniques that you can do with minimal effort and minimal materials. In fact, a roll of painter's tape (the blue stuff) and an imagination can go a long way. Paint the room one color, or give it an accent wall. Remember, this is your room and the sky is the limit - speaking of the sky, even the ceiling can be painted.

Play with the space.

The more space a room has, the more open it appears to be. The more open the room appears, the more room or square footage, you feel you have. That means you can actually make your house feel bigger - now wouldn't that be nice? There are many ways you can do this. Instead of the huge sectional, get the smaller furniture. If there is a lot of stuff and clutter, get the clutter out. Invest in some closet organizers or even some ways of putting things where nobody can see it. Also, a trick that has been used for centuries, mirrors on the wall make the room seem bigger. Your imagination is the only thing that can stop you. Play with all of the space you have, and look into how other people have played with the same size of space you have.

Float the floor

Do something with the floor. Put down hard wood floors, or buy laminate that has the same look. If you're worried about the budget and the cost, buy 1 piece per paycheck. Eventually, you'll have everything you need and the floor you want. You can also put in some area carpets and runners. Small carpet with long lines adds length to your space. You can also pull up the old carpeting. It's amazing what people have carpeted over in the past. This is especially true if you're living in an older house. You just might find gorgeous hard wood floors under that ratty carpet.

Couture the ceiling

Do something with the ceiling. Do anything with the ceiling. This area of a room is often forgotten and ignored, but as soon as something is there, it opens the whole room up. Add dimension to your room or even neat conversation pieces does wonders. Add some texture or put on some color and BAMM your room and its inhabitants will never be the same. A couple of neat ideas I've seen are small 1-inch square mirrors pasted all over. I've also seen a chandelier that is very small, and very bright that creates a height dimension that really isn't there. However you design your room, don't forget the ceiling.

Pictures and mirrors change everything.

You've walked into a house and seen all of the kid's pictures taking up every inch of the house. It's great to want to see the kids, but this collage of clutter just makes the walls feel like their closing in. There was an artist whom painted a picture of his 2 children walking up a flight of stairs. He painted it in such a way that it looked like they were walking toward you. At the bottom of the painting, he put a 2-stair step stool making it look like there really was a staircase. Accidentally, he gave the entire room more space and depth by making the mind believe that he had a whole second level and a staircase. A mere painting or a continued line from a paining adds more than one would believe. Put in pictures of nature, and the room takes on a natural feel. Put in a bunch of mirrors, and the room feels more open. Put in a few pictures, and the whole room changes.

No matter your budget, your time, or where you live - it's really simple to change the feel and look of a room.
