5 New Ways to Save Money!

Carlena Doggett
In this economy people are often looking for ways to both make money as well as save money. I am one of those people and through research and personal experiences I plan to share as much financial knowledge with the public that I can offer. Below you'll find a few tips and things that you can do to save money. While each one varies in the amount of savings, every little bit saved counts because when you combine one or more of these money saving tips you can save a lot.

1. Unplug things - People may often think that not using electrical appliances or simply turning them off when not in use can save money, which is true. But did you know that you can save even more money by just unplugging things all together? Try going through your household and first unplug things that you see plugged up that you don't use on a daily basis such as toasters, printers, electric hair tools (curling irons, blow dryers, etc), cell phone chargers, radios etc. Next, you can even go as far as to unplug other things that you may use daily, but not at the current moment such as your Television. This will save you a lot of money on your next electric bill. Just try and see if it makes a difference for you.

2. Pay your bills on time - If you're a person with bills then you know that paying those bills late can cost you even more money than if you would've just paid it on time. Late fees can cost anywhere from $15-$25 depending upon the service that you're paying for. Avoid having to spend extra money by paying your bills on time. If you often forget due dates, then set reminders on your cell phone or try signing up for automatic bill pay through your bank. Doing this can also save you paper fees as well seeing how some companies now charge you for sending you a paper bill.

3. Disconnect your landline - Unless you have small children, there's honestly no need for a landline phone anymore with the advancement of technology and the cell phones. You can get an unlimited cell phone plan for as low as $35/month with the new cricket phone service, and many other cellular phone companies offer the same type of plan but the prices vary. If everyone in your home has a cell phone, what's the purpose of the landline?

4. Get to the movies early - If you like to watch movies at the theatre get there early to save money! Movie theatre tickets after 5PM can be very expensive ranging anywhere from $10-$14 but if you get there before 5PM you can catch what they call a matinee and the tickets are usually anywhere from $7-$9 saving you anywhere from $3-$5!

5. Avoid ATM fees - If you use an ATM that's not affiliated with your bank you could be charged anywhere from $1.50 - $5.00 for withdrawing money. Over time, this adds up to be a lot. Try just swiping your card at the retailer instead of using cash. If you must use cash, then go to your bank and withdraw the money there, or find out where an ATM machine is that's affiliated with your bank.
