5 Ways to Save Money on Prom Flowers

So you've got your prom dress or tuxedo. You've got the shoes, the hair, the accessories, everything you need. But what about the flowers? Here are five easy ways to save money on prom flowers for this year's big dance. With a little thinking outside the box, you will be well on your way to having beautiful prom flowers, corsages and boutonnières that don't cost a fortune.

Firstly, look around you! We have become so dependent on store-bought blooms that many of us have forgotten that nature provides the originals. Especially in spring, Mother Nature will have just as fine a selection as the local florist. Gather flowers for your prom date from along the roadside or in other natural areas (as long as you're not trespassing, of course). Spring beauties are the perfect size for prom boutonnieres; tiger lilies make a striking corsage. Take the wildflowers to a local florist to transform into the boutonniere or corsage, or simply tie the bouquet with a ribbon and present them to your prom date to carry.

Along that same line, ask your parents or your parents' friends if you can harvest some of their garden blooms for your prom flowers. Most adults are so wrapped up in their children's or friends' children's prom that they'll jump at the chance to be a part of it. Many would also love the opportunity to have their garden flowers admired. You may also find a volunteer to create your prom corsage for you. Remember to be respectful of others' property.

You can also make your own prom flowers easily. Save on Crafts.com sells all the materials you would need for much less than a completed corsage or boutonniere. Craft stores like Michael's also carry the materials, as well as a wide selection of beautiful silk flowers. Remember, hand-crafted equals from the heart! Your prom flowers will be that much more meaningful to your prom date because of the work you put into it; in addition, you can design your prom flowers any way you want!

If you do go to a professional florist, you can save money by asking for atypical prom flowers. Who wants to wear exactly the same flowers as everyone else, anyway? Usually white roses, orchids and lilies are in high demand, so look for vibrant but inexpensive alternatives. Carnations, daisies and irises would work wonderfully.

Finally, if you really want to make a statement, try making duct tape flowers for your prom. Tiny duct tape roses and rose buds can come in as many colors as the tape itself, and look adorable! These can be bought premade, but that's missing out on the fun. The Duct Tape Guys.com gives you detailed instructions on constructing duct tape roses for your prom date.
