- Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a utility that will clean up your hard drive out for you. You can select what you want it to delete for you and when it's done you will have more free space therefore allowing your computer to go a little bit faster.
Steps to run disk cleanup: Click Start, then go to My Computer, right click on Local Disk, go to Properties, and then hit Disk Cleanup.
- Uninstall Unused Software
By going to Set Program Access and Defaults on your computer, you will be able to view all of the software that is installed in your computer. If you look through it and you decide that there's something in there that you're not using or that you don't like you should delete it as it will surely help in getting your computer to run faster.
Steps to uninstalling programs: Click Start, then go to Set Program Access and Defaults. Once you're there click on Change or Remove Programs and wait for your currently installed programs to load. Once they have, chose the ones you want to uninstall and click Remove.
- Stop programs at start-up
When you start your computer each time there's programs that start with it. Those programs will run whether you're using them or not, and they will slow your computer down. In order to stop these programs from starting up, you can select the option when you first install it, you can go back and change the settings on the program, or you can get a small free utility online to help you control these programs at start up.
- Close big programs
If you're running Adobe, Macromedia, a lot of messengers, games, and a lot of websites that are using Flash or a lot of Java then your computer is definitely going to be slow. Try to close out these big programs if you're not using them or try having them open one at a time. When you close big programs like that your computer speeds up instantly without you having to do anything at all.
- Stop background programs
If you right click on task bar, choose Task Manager, and then go to Processes, you will see all of the processes that your computer is processing. Try to stop these background programs and you'll see how the memory usage will become minimal and your programs that you're actually using will not drive you crazy by going slow.
