5 Windows Service Pack 2 Improvements

Paul Cabrera
Are you wondering why there are almost zero reviews regarding Windows Vista Service Pack 2? For one, Microsoft would really rather you just focus on Windows 7. The other reason is that there really isn't that much to brag about in Service Pack 2.

At its core, Vista Service Pack 2 is simply all of the various patches and fixes that have been applied to Vista. If you have been regularly updating Vista, you won't actually need to upgrade it.

After some testing, I found that Vista is essentially still Vista. Windows XP Service Pack 3 still runs faster. Windows 7, even before release, is still better. However, for those still curious, here are five reasons that you may want to upgrade to Vista Service Pack 2.

1. Though the majority of us do not have Blu-Ray writing drives, but for those who do, Vista Service Pack 2 offers support for it.

2. Vista Service Pack 2 also provides support for Bluetooth v2.1 and also has a better, more stable protocol for Wi-Fi. One notable improvement is that Vista seems to have a much easier time reconnecting to a wireless network after disconnecting. This is a good reason to download Vista Service Pack 2 if you are having connection problems.

3. New Tool: Service Pack Clean Up. This new program will allow you to delete automatically any old system file versions. I have known many Windows glitches to be blamed over outdated DLLs, so this seems like a favorable addition.

However, on the other hand, many Windows programs have also failed because they needed some old files to function properly. So, as a precaution, before cleaning your old files, make sure to completely back up your old system. In the long run, who wants an up to date system that won't function properly?

4. Extended version of the FAT Filing System. This file system is designed to work with Flash memory. Its functions including handling very large file sizes compared to the typical NTFS. For anyone using SSD, or solid state drives, this may be useful.

5. Better use of system resources. Generally, I think that Windows Service Pack 2 was less intensive on the system and runs just a bit faster. However, compared to XP and Windows 7, Vista is still Vista aka a resource burner. If you have no other option other than Vista, you may appreciate the minor speed boost.

Well, I certainly saw no improvement in speed or performance. AND it killed the ability to print to a Canon MX850 over USB or network. Gawd, can Microsoft get anything right? I've tried Windows 7 and it is so full of bugs, its ridiculous.
