5 Women Who Could Replace Jennifer Lopez on "American Idol"

Chris Houston

Jennifer Lopez is the last of the three judges on "American Idol" to say she's headed back in 2012. Lopez helped "American Idol" maintain steady ratings during her initial season on the show. Her positive outlook was often criticized but also adored by many. Her style and enthusiasm would certainly be missed if she decides to pursue other options next year.

So if Lopez decides to go a different direction, which female star could replace her if she opts out of "Idol" for 2012? Here are my top five possible replacements for Lopez if she decides not to come back for a second season.

1) Lady Gaga
Gaga excelled as a mentor on "American Idol" this past season and she has always graced the show with magnificient performances. Gaga would bring with her some of the stage presence and uniqueness that no other judges could possibly live up to. Gaga would be an interesting choice for her weekly style and for what she says each episode. I don't think "American Idol" producers would flinch if they had an opportunity to bring the stylish icon into the mix-with or without Lopez.

2) Beyonce
Does the addition of Beyonce mean "American Idol" gets a few more appearances from Jay Z? It would certainly be a big name celebrity to throw into the mix if Beyonce replaces Jennifer Lopez. She has the talent, beauty and fashion to be one of the most talked about judges in recent memory.

3) Carrie Underwood
Underwood, like Beyonce and Lady Gaga, will probably be too busy touring to accept the nod as a judge from "American Idol." If anyone understands the process and what it takes to be on the show, it would be former contestant Underwood. Carrie could also perform several times during the course of the show to provide further inspiration for contestants.

4) Reba McEntire
If the past season of "American Idol" didn't prove that the show hasa huge country music fan base, I'm not sure what will. Country singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina finished first and second respectively. "The Voice" has utilized country singer Blake Shelton so wouldn't it make sense that a country artist like Reba could be compelling asa third judge and replacement for Lopez? Reba has television experience and even made a guest appearance on "The Voice." She would bring an instant credibility and would probably be a favorite judge for female contestants.

5) Mariah Carey
Carey is busy raising babies these days but perhaps she could take time to offer contestants her advice on "American Idol" as the Lopez replacement in 2012. Carey is one of the most talented singers on the planet and always watched closely for her style. Her appearance on "Idol" would bring female viewers to the show and might even help her reboot her own career.
