5 Year Old Picks Baby Sister's Name

Tammy Forner
When my son was four, my husband and I decided to have another baby. We loved parenting had talked about it before and wanted our son to have a sibling. We wanted him to have a bond with another human being that only a sibling could provide. Little did we know then the effect he would have on his future sister.

I was pregnant with his sister by the time my son was five. He was excited about having a sister, but understandably concerned about me being sick so much. One day while playing with him on the floor he asked me whether I was dying. I explained to him that me getting sick in the mornings just meant his sister was growing inside me and that I would be all right. I told him the sickness would soon go away. I realized then that my little boy needed to be kept informed and had just as much an interest in our growing family as my husband and I. I am still learning that motherhood is a lifelong process that changes as the situations in life transition to new ones.

My husband and I discussed several different names that we were considering over the course of my pregnancy. None of the names really stuck with us though. One day while my husband and I were sitting in the living room watching TV my son asked when "Katie" would be coming. My husband and I looked at each other surprised since that had not been a name we had previously discussed. We did instantly like it though.

After some research on names that used Katie for short we decided on Kaitlyn. Since my middle name is Lynn, we thought it was a good choice. In her baby book is the original printout from the website that gave the origin of her name and what it means (pure, little darling) as well as the story of how her name came about. Although as she has gotten older and went from Ke-Ke to now Kate, she will always be our little darling Katie thanks to her big brother.
