50 Million Pound Challenge Heads to Milwaukee

The 50 million pound challenge makes stop No. 11 on the 14-stop tour in Milwaukee on August 25th.

The 50 million pound challenge was created by Dr. Ian K. Smith in partnership with State Farm insurance to encourage African-Americans to take control of their health & take up the fight against weight-related illnesses. The African American Community obesity rates are alarming. According to the 50 million pound challenge website, "almost 80% of adult women and 67% of adult men are overweight. Equally worrisome is that 20% of African-American teenagers between the ages 12-19 are overweight, and this number appears to be rising."

Dr. Ian K. Smith has teamed up with an impressive resume of African American community leaders and organizations to encourage the African-American community to shed the pounds.

Supporters of the 50 million pound challenge include, Gayle king, Kelly Price, Ashford & Simpson, Baiz Markie, Morgan Dukes, Omarion, Kimberly Locke, Da Brat, Ted Lange, Jackee, Bone Crusher, and Bootsy Collins. It is one of the most far-reaching initiatives of its kind.

The challenge started on April 7th, 2007 and to date 202,124 people have joined at 50millionpounds.com and lost 484,166 total pounds.

The Milwaukee Challenge Tour event will be held in Washington Park, from 12-4 p.m. There will be a lineup of FREE entertainment that will feature:

* Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone,
* Grammy-winning singing sensation 112,
* Rapper Slick Rick,
* R&B singer Shirley Murdock,
* Milwaukee Bucks star NBA point guard Maurice Williams,
* Renowned DJ Biz Markie, and
* Radio personality J. Anthony Brown will join Dr. Ian to put on an afternoon of entertainment live music, fitness and fun.

Everyone who attends the Milkwaulkee event will also recieve a free health screenings and learn more about the initiative. The staff photographers will be on hand to take free eshots photo to use as a "before" shot for the site.

The motto of the 50millionpoundchallenge is "Give up the Pounds, Not the Fight." This challenge is putting the African American Community on the right track when it comes to taking control of their lives and getting rid of the excess weight.
