Clothing Styles for Girls.
The classic 50s costume for girls begins with the famous poodle skirt. These skirts are easy to find around Halloween time. You can usually find them at most stores selling Halloween costumes, or you can rent them at a costume shop. If you are handy with a sewing machine, you can also make your own poodle skirt. Try Simplicity's pattern 3847 with a solid, brightly-colored fabric to make the perfect poodle skirt. Complete this 50s style costume with a matching button-up shirt or blouse. You can also tie a scarf around your neck and wear white socks and white tennis shoes or saddle oxford shoes.
Another 50s style costume for girls includes the same basic ideas, but can be dressed up to be a little older or more sophisticated. Instead of a typical poodle skirt, find a solid, less-decorated skirt with the same basic style and shape. Add a white button-up blouse with a cardigan sweater over the shoulders. You can then add a pearl necklace, rather than a scarf, and complete with matching gloves.
Another 50s style costume idea is to do the soda shop waitress costume. You can use the same Simplicity pattern, 3847, to sew this costume. This costume has a similar style, but is more casual with a shorter skirt, apron, and hat. If you want to go all out, you can even complete the costume with roller blades.
Hair and Make-up.
The classic 50s hairstyle for girls is to pull your hair back into a pony tail with blunt bangs in the front. You can use a scarf or ribbon to tie the hair back. The make-up style is fairly simple. Try some neutral eye-shadow with basic black eyeliner and mascara. Emphasize the lips with a bright red or pink lipstick and apply a matching blush.
Clothing Styles for Boys.
The typical 50s style costume for boys is a plain white t-shirt, straight-legged jeans with the cuffs rolled up, and tennis shoes or saddle oxfords. You can also add a black leather jacket with the collar turned up. You can slick your hair back and be sure to put a comb in your pocket so you are always ready for a touch-up.
