In a press release Hillandale Farms confirmed they recalled their eggs after laboratory tests confirmed many of the eggs had salmonella in them. The recall is the second in a week and brings the total number of eggs recalled to 550 million.
Hillandale Farms has distribution centers in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast, including Bushnell, Florida. The eggs that were recalled Friday were distributed under the brand names Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, Sunny Meadow, Wholesome Farms and West Creek.
According to Hillandale Farms website the eggs would have been sold between April and August.
The FDA reported the recall of Hillandale Farms eggs coincides with the recall this week of eggs from Wright County Egg, which has already recalled 380 million eggs. The same strain of salmonella was found in both company's eggs. The FDA said that while no one has been killed by the salmonella outbreak, they expect the number of people sickened by the foodborne illness to grow in the coming days.
The FDA reportedly stepped in Wednesday when it discovered that Wright County Egg continued shipping eggs even after they had been flagged for a salmonella outbreak and asked to stop production and distribution immediately. Several consumers sickened by Wright County Egg have already brought lawsuits against the company.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the FDA are urging consumers to read your egg cartons for these numbers involved in the recall:
1026, 1413, 1946, 1720, 1942, 1951, 1686, 1091
If you have a carton with these numbers on them you can return the eggs to the point of purchase for a full refund.
