Directions for 5-Alarm Chili Dogs - a Great Super Bowl Meal
1
Preparing the Wieners
Make shallow diagonal scores in each of the wieners, and then put them in a shallow pan. Add the beer to cover the wieners and set them aside to marinate for about two hours. After they've marinated for two hours, roast them over charcoal or on a cookie sheet in the oven.2
Making the 5-alarm chili
Mix the salt and pepper into the ground beef, and brown the meat in a large skillet. When it is browned to your satisfaction, put it in a large sauce pan and add the rest of the ingredients (except for the chopped white onion and cheese). Bring the chili to a slow boil, stirring often, and then lower the heat and let it simmer for about two hours, stirring occasionally.3
Constructing the Chili Dog
Put two toasted buns on each plate, and ladle a small amount of chili into each bun. Put a wiener on each bun, and then cover it with chili.4
What to do with the chopped onions and cheese
The chopped onions and cheese should be put in separate dishes and placed somewhere handy to allow diners to sprinkle them over the chili dogs if they so desire.Tip
While you're roasting the wieners in this recipe, you can also toast the buns. Be careful, though, not to overcook them. You want them slightly toasted, not crispy.
