On the first day we read from the "Everything your 5th Grader Should Know" book. It breaks the digestive system down and shows how it works. We discussed what the book had said about the digestive system.
On the second day we read the story from yucky.discovery.com on the digestive system. This seems to really break it down to a kids point of view. Then I printed the digestive system worksheet out from Enchanted Learning and had him label the worksheet. I helped him label the worksheet and then we went over it together.
On the third day we read the information on the kids health site about the digestive system. This site breaks each section down and explains it. After we read the information we played the little flash game on that page. You roll your mouse over a part of the system and it tells you what it is and what it does. We then went over the worksheet that he labeled the day before.
On the fourth day we looked at the different digestive system pictures on google. We went to google and typed in Digestive System in the images field and it brought up all types of pictures. He really enjoyed looking at them. After that we went through the flash cards that I had made. I printed out the different parts of the system and glued them on an index card. Then on the back I wrote what it was and what it did. I showed him the cards and asked him what they were.
On the fifth day I gave him the same worksheet from the second day and let him fill it out on his own. I printed two of those worksheets. This was his test. He did great. So this route worked for me. I hope it will work for you too. Or at least give you some help.
I go over the flash cards every couple of weeks to refresh his memory. This only takes a couple of minutes. Please see the links in the box below to visit the sites mentioned in this article. These are some great sites to help out with the Digestive System. You have to be a member of Enchanted Learning to print their worksheets. I'm sure you can find some free digestive system worksheets somewhere on the web if you are not a member of Enchanted Learning.
