6 Beauty Secrets from a Former Model

Monica Bullock
As a former nineties model, I spent a lot of my time working on looking my best. A model has to look terrific even in her off time. You would be surprised at the number of times I've heard people whisper, "She's a model?" (Usually during cold and flu season!) I picked up a few pointers along the way that kept me winning those photo jobs. If you are thinking about becoming a model or just want to look like one try these 6 beauty secrets.

Sleeping Beauty

Be one! Take your sleep seriously and guard it like a weightlifter guards his gym time. To be a model you have to look rested. Set a sleep schedule and stick to it.

Your Hair, Baby

Bad hair days happen. Unfortunately, a nice mane is a serious selling point in the modeling world. Control frizz with a pea sized amount of hand lotion. Rub it into the ends of your hair to give it some control. This works in a pinch after a walk through the fog or a humid day. Keep your hair styled classically and make sure your portfolio represents your hair in different styles.

Eye Tricks

Besides your hair, your eye look is important. Agencies and clients want a model that will be a canvas. Wear eye looks that show some sparkle but don't look over-sparkly. Sweep a shimmer of gold on the lower lid or lighten the inner corner with a touch of vanilla. Don't bother with a complicated eye look when heading for a casting call. Show off your modeling potential not your makeup skills.

Lipstick Doubles

Did you know, in a pinch your lipstick can double as a blusher? That's right! If you need color quickly, blot your lipstick on the pad of your forefinger. Touch your cheekbones slightly with the lipstick then rub it in. Walla, instant color!

Control Your Lips

Fatten lips or make them shrink with a neutral lip liner. You can add volume by outlining the lips on the outside of the natural line. Shrink them by lining inside the natural line. Use a color that matches your lip skin color.

Two Concealers

No model has perfect skin. You'll need a concealer to hide those blemishes and dark spots. Apply a yellow concealer or blue-based concealer under makeup. Use a flesh colored concealer over your foundation.

Looking a model is all about attitude. Be confident and it will show. These beauty secrets couldn't hurt either.
