6 Breast Symptoms Women Should Never Ignore

Jody Morse
Gynecologists often tell us to check for lumps or skin dimpling during our self breast exams. What many women do not realize is that there are many other possible symptoms of breast cancer that you should be looking out for. Here are six breast symptoms women should never ignore.

Nipple Peeling or Flaking

When many women experience this breast symptom, they figure it must be caused by dry skin or an allergic reaction to a new soap - and it could be. However, nipple peeling or flaking can also be a sign of Paget disease of the breast, which is a type of cancer that affects the nipple. If the problem persists after you switch detergents, be sure to call your doctor.

Changes in Skin Texture

Any time you notice changes in the texture of your skin, it's important to make an appointment with your doctor. Skin thickening and scaliness are both breast cancer symptoms. Also be sure to look out for pitting, which causes the skin to take on an orange peel-like texture.

An Itchy Rash

An itchy, red rash can be caused by an allergic reaction or it may be caused by Paget disease of the breast. Inflammatory breast cancer can also cause the breast skin to appear red in color. It's especially important to get checked if only one breast has a rash, as Paget disease and inflammatory breast cancer rarely affect both breasts. An itchy rash may also be caused by a fungal infection or yeast infection which can be cleared up with a topical medication from your doctor.

Inverted Nipple

Inverted nipples, which retract inward, are a sign of breast cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some women are born with inverted nipples, while others notice them when they begin breastfeeding. If you have noticed that your nipples have suddenly begun to retract, it's best to talk to your doctor.

Increase in Breast Size

Breast size changes can be caused by starting a birth control pill containing estrogen. However, size changes may also be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, which blocks the lymph vessels in the skin, according to AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation. The end result is swelling, which can cause the breast to appear larger.

Nipple Discharge

Nipple discharge commonly occurs during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you notice it at other times, it's best to have it checked out by a doctor - especially if the discharge is brown, bloody, yellow, or green. Several types of breast cancer can be to blame, as well as breast infections and other conditions.

Make an appointment with your doctor any time you experience any unusual changes in your breasts. Early detection plays a key role in the successful treatment of breast cancer.
