Every year flu complications hospitalize over 200,000 Americans and over 200 viruses cause common colds. Common Cold and Fly Myth #1

Do you start to get the sniffles when you're out in the cold for a period of time? You probably thought that was leading to a cold. Fortunately, you were wrong. You don't get a cold just by being cold. Many reasons exist as to why viruses spread from person to person during the winter, but getting the chills is not one of those.

Common Cold and Flu Myth #2

Unfortunately for us, nasal decongestants don't actually cure colds. However, they make you feel better by shrinking the mucous membranes so you can breathe more easily and sleep better. You will need to be careful when using the nasal sprays and decongestants that promise 12-hour relief, as you can get "addicted" to it and need to keep using it prevent stuffiness. A spray with a shorter relief span won't get you hooked as easily.

Common Cold and Flu Myth #3

Have you heard the expression "feed a cold, starve a fever"? Don't take that expression literally. If you have a cold and you're feeling hungry, eat moderately and healthily. The same advice goes for if you have a fever. In addition, drink plenty of fluids while you have a fever so you don't get dehydrated.

Common Cold and Flu Myth #4

What do you usually do when you feel a sneeze or cough coming? You try to cover your face with your hands, right? Coughing or sneezing into your hands only coats them with germs, which get deposited on everything and everyone you touch afterwards. Use a tissue, and if you don't have a tissue available, turn your head away from other people and cough or sneeze into the crook of your arm instead.

Common Cold and Flu Fact #1

One thing you may not be aware of that can increase your chances of getting sick is stress. If you're feeling stressed and you get exposed to viruses, you'll have a greater chance of getting sick. No wonder most people get sick during the wintertime with all of the things they have to worry about during the holiday season. However, this usually happens because people don't plan ahead; therefore they find themselves rushing all over the place at the last minute. The best thing you can do for yourself is to plan out what you'll do this coming winter. This applies to holiday meal or party planning, gift shopping, travel plans, and anything else you can think of.

Common Cold and Flu Fact #2

Something you may have heard about and dismissed as one of those common cold and flu myths is the chicken soup cure. It's true that chicken soup can't cure the cold or flu, but it does have decongestant properties in the broth and vegetable combination that help to clear clogged airways. So when you're looking to get some relief during your next bout of cold or influenza, try this old stand-by especially the home-made variety.
