1. Laptop and Printer -
Many colleges and universities now require incoming freshman to have either a desktop or laptop computer. However, a laptop is recommended. Let's face it: You aren't always going to want to stay holed up in your room working on homework. With a laptop, you can go anywhere on campus (preferably a location with a great view) and complete class work. A good three-in one printer (printer, copier, and scanner) is also a great idea. They aren't very expensive and will save you time printing over the networked campus printers.
2. Sturdy Backpack -
With all of the books and class materials, you are going to need a backpack that holds up well. It will become your home away from home, and it needs to be comfortable. Chances are that you will go through many backpacks throughout your college career. If you can, find a brand that works for you.
3. Fun Bedroom Set -
Dorm rooms can be incredibly boring. Why not spice it up with a fun, bright bedroom set? You can get bed-in-a-bag sets fairly reasonably, and they include sheets, comforter, and sometimes curtains. If you find the right bedding, it doesn't take much more to complete your dorm room (yes, they are that small).
4. A Good Cell Phone and Plan -
The pre-paid cell phone that you had in high school might not be the best option once you are a college freshman. You are going to want to keep in touch with your family and friends in the easiest way possible. There are some great, fairly inexpensive cell phone plans out there. By doing a little research, you can get the most for your money and stay in touch. Don't forget to have people call you too!
5. Planner/Organizer -
Whether you want to go electronic or not, you are going to need a good planner/organizer. You will have assignments that have due dates, extracurricular activities to remember, and social events. College life is so full that you will have a hard time doing well if you don't get organized. While you can certainly spend the big money and either purchase an electronic organizer or a Franklin Covey Collegiate planner, there are much less expensive alternatives that work just as well. You can create your own Google.com account and keep your calendar on-line. You can also spend around $25 for a simple, inexpensive planner. There is no need to spend a lot of money.
6. Additional Class Supplies -
Of course, you'll be spending a small fortune on course books; however, even before the first day of class, you can purchase your other class supplies. The easiest way to organize your course work is to purchase a folder and notebook for each class. That is it. You may need additional notebooks or specialized supplies, but those two simple things will get you started. In addition, you will want to ensure that the desk in your dorm room is well stocked with pens, highlighters, pencils, a good calculator, and post-it notes. Again, you don't have to spend a lot of money in order to be effective and prepared.
There are certainly many other things that you may want as a college freshman, but this bare bones list will ensure that you are prepared, no matter how much money you have to spend.
