At home use only
If you are the type of person that will only use your computer from home, a desktop would be a way better fit than owning a laptop. The main difference between laptops and desktop computers is the portability laptops offer. Owning a laptop for at home use only defeats the purpose of buying a laptop instead of a desktop computer and you'd be better off saving on the price difference between laptop and desktop computers.
Repair and Upgrading
Laptop and desktop computers aren't accident proof and will need to have minor and major repairs throughout their lifespan. The difference in how these two computers are repaired are vital and can make a huge difference in your choice to buy either one. Laptops are built in a very small case that require professional repair due to its tight build (usually), while the extra room and easy access of a desktop computer allows a quick and easy way to upgrade and repair your computer at will.
I f you ever plan to upgrade a laptop, you'll be able to do simple things like upgrade the RAM or hard drive, but upgrading the screen will require buying a new laptop. When it comes to upgrading a laptop vs. upgrading a desktop there is a huge difference. Desktops aren't all-in-one devices and allow you to upgrade the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and internal components individually without tossing the entire investmetn.
Performance
There are lots of fast performing laptops on the market today but for the difference in price for an equally fast desktop computer, you'd be better served buying a desktop computer. Desktop computers are built to support large (and powerful) graphics cards, power supplies, motherboards, and other internal components. Generally speaking, there is a big difference in performance between laptop and desktop computers and desktops are usually the better option.
Price
I've already hinted at this, but the price difference between two comparable laptops and desktop computers will almost always crown the desktop as the better buy. More people are buying laptops than desktops nowadays and the price of desktop computers are plummeting while performance is boosting. The difference between buying a laptop and desktop computer is that when you by a laptop, you're buying portability; but when you buy a desktop computer, you're buying performance.
Protection
Another difference in the way laptop and desktop computers are built is that laptops can't take as much damage as desktops and laptops face more risk of damage than desktop computers. The hard casing of the average desktop computer can take quite a bit of damage and desktop computer's internal components are more spaced out (for a longer life time) and secure. Desktop computers are usually grounded and in a secure spot, while easily broken laptops are exposed to worldly elements often and run a greater risk for being damaged.
Space and Ergonomics
If you have experience using both laptop and desktop computers, you'll notice the difference in ergonomics between the two and how desktop computers offer way more space and room for regular use than laptops. The difference that makes desktops better is that a desktop has an external keyboard, mouse, monitor, and its own designated location to guarantee more comfortable usage on a consistent basis than when using a laptop. A desktop is a way better option for space because there is no need to scrunch over your laptop to view the screen, type on the laptop's smaller keyboard, or put up with that annoying finger pad while using a desktop.
Ultimately the laptop and desktop computers have their strong and weak selling points, but there's a huge difference between the way laptop and desktop computers were made to be used. If you are looking for all of the aforementioned benefits, it'd be better to buy a desktop instead of a laptop computer.

Post a CommentMy husband is trying to make this very decision right now. He decided that he can get everything he wants in a desktop for $550; to get all the same features in a laptop will cost $1200. Big difference!
I agree with you 100%, Millionaire (still can't get over the fact it's your real name), that buying a desktop beats out a laptop purchase every time. Whether it's bang-for-the-buck or just performance, a desktop is definitely the better buy. Unless, you know, you put a huge premium on carrying around your laptop and being "portable" and all that!
