6 Fun Ways to Repurpose Apple Cider Jugs

Angela W. La Fon

From the first sign of fall with the apples festivals to the warm apple cider simmering in the slow cooker for Christmas, we love apple cider. We are so lucky to be surrounded by apple orchards where we can buy local apple cider. The apple cider comes in quite attractive glass jugs. I knew we could recycle them but they were so nice I wondered if the apple orchards themselves might reuse them. After being told no, we started coming up with our own ways to repurpose apple cider jugs.

Simple coin bank:

The opening of the apple cider jug is perfect for coins and even fits quarters. It's fun for the family to watch the apple cider jug get refilled up with coins. It's a sweet way to save for a family treat like a night out at the movies or a new Wii game.

Attractive canisters for dried beans:

When we buy dried beans in bulk, I always want to repackage them but my canisters are full of flour, sugar and baking ingredients. With a funnel, I can store dried beans in a clean and dry apple cider jug and it's so attractive that they can even sit out.

Fun keepsake jar for any trip from a vacation to a hike:

Whether it's filled with small shells or acorns, an apple cider jar is a natural choice for creating a three dimensional keepsake from a special time together. It's fun for the kids to see "how many" it takes to fill up the jug.

Sweet candy dish:

Sweet treats are best when they are small like a Hershey's Kiss or a peppermint candy. Maybe the cookie jar is empty but from Halloween to Christmas, you can fill an apple cider jar with small candies.

Unique flower vases:

Want an easy and inexpensive centerpiece for any occasion? Put food coloring and water into an apple cider jar and add tall stems of mini carnations. You can have orange for a Halloween harvest, pink for a baby shower or red for Christmas.

Make your own homemade "find it" toy:

Fill a jug with rice and add tiny toys and odd objects. Kids can shake and turn the jug to "find" the surprised inside of this fun homemade toy.
