Are you looking for winter fun in northern Michigan? Here are 6 great reasons to visit Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

1. Searchmont Resort -

Located 30 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, this ski resort offers wonderful skiing opportunities for both the advanced skier and the person who has never skied before. Their private skiing lessons are great (I've taken them before) and the offer group classes for both adults and children. In addition, Searchmont includes snowmobiling trails nearby and lodging options.

2. The Algoma Central Railway -

This railroad line will take you deep into the Canadian wilderness. During the winter months, you can spend the day on the Snow Train. In the fall months, the Tour Train will give a breathtaking view of fall colors. The Agawa Canyon is an amazing site, no matter what time of year you visit. Trains leave from the station in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It makes for an interesting trip!

3. The Locks -

The Soo Locks, which connect Lake Superior with the lower Great Lakes, can be toured by using any number of boat tour companies in the area (during the summer, of course). You can even opt to go on a dinner cruise. The locks are world famous and help make shipping on the Great Lakes possible. c

4. Casinos -

There are no less than four casinos in the Sault Ste. Marie area, the most popular of which is Kewadin Casino.

5. Its Central Location -

Sault Ste. Marie is strategically located not just between the United States and Canada, but Lake Superior and the rest of the lower Great Lakes as well. In addition, it is strategic location from which to explore the eastern Upper Peninsula. From Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, you can make easy day trips to St. Ignace, Mackinaw Island, Whitefish Point and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the Hiawatha National Forest, Tahquamenon Falls, and much more.
