I've been using the Wordpress platform on my blog The Psycho Babbles. for a couple years now, and I have tried, and discarded, many plug-ins along the way.
Recently, I've been experimenting on my blog with sharing recipes, and I've found some plug-ins for Wordpress that have made it a much more enjoyable experience. Both for me, and for my readers!
hRecipe Plug-In When viewing a recipe, formatting can play a big part in whether or not your reader stays on your page, or moves on to someone else.
If the ingredients are written more like a run-on sentence than a list, and the directions are all crammed into one paragraph, it is not easy to read your recipe. hRecipe changes that, with very little effort on your part. You click the button on your posts dashboard, input the right info in the correct field, and hRecipe figures out where everything needs to be.
WP Print-This Plug-In While you are making things easier for your reader, consider the Print-This Plug-In. It takes little-to-no tech savvy to install, and it let's you choose which parts of your post are printable. This lets your readers print off your recipe, without printing out your sidebar, your photos and your header. It allows them to print out the part they really came for. Your yummy eats and clear directions. When you are configuring the plug-in, you can set it to add your name, url and copyright information to the printed sheet. And speaking of copyrights -- .
Simple Feed Copyright and WP Easy Copyright are two plug-ins designed to help protect your recipes and posts. Food bloggers sometimes neglect to think about the copyright issue, but these recipes are your work. Oftentimes it's hard work, and a lot of time and effort involved in making things come out the way you want them to. Why should someone else reap the benefit from your hard work? Really, I feel these are two plug-ins any blogger could benefit from. Simple Feed works to help protect your feed from being scraped. It inserts a little copyright notice and link back to your blog. If your feed is scraped and republished, that link will create a pingback, and you'll know someone has posted your work elsewhere. WP Easy Copyright protects your site itself from being copied.
ShareThis or SexyBookmarks are two options for plug-ins that will increase your reader's ability to share your posts. People like this to be easy, which is why that's the theme for most of these plug-ins. Sharing is no different. Putting little buttons tied to various social media networks right in your posts will make it so much easier for your readers to share those posts. They can digg, stumble, like, tweet and whatnot to their hearts content, with very little effort. It's a definite win for everyone!
I've found these plug-ins to be incredibly helpful when blogging about food, and blogging in general. They are definitely plug-ins I would recommend to any food blogger in a heartbeat.
