Cost of living
This probably the main reason for you to want to move to the Midwest. The cost of living is much lower. Prices are lower in just about everything. I know this for a fact cause I lived there for many years. In the East Coast, I know families who work more than one job just to pay the bills. This is the American dream gone haywire.
Mortgages
Lets just face it the average home on the East Coast can start $275,000. Thats just for a 2 bedroom ranch. No wonder family members will have more than one job. I am not talking about the wife working and the husband working. I am talking about the wife and husband sometimes having two jobs. I knew of one couple who had 3 jobs each. This is not just my opinion this is the way it is here. You have to bust your chops to live. The average house in the Midwest is $125,000. Many 2 or 3 bedroom ranch type home barely make the the $100,000 price range. I owned a 3 bedroom ranch in Indiana and I payed less than $40,000 for it and it had a full basement.
Employment
I hear this argument all the time that the cost of living is lower cause the wages are lower. This is just not true. The wages are higher in some professions and equal in others. There are some low end jobs but the same holds true here on the East Coast. Most wages are very similar to the money that is made on the East Coast. I lived there most of life and used to read the employment ads on occasion.
Apartment living or mobile home
Those who choose to live to live in apartments or mobile homes in the Midwest pay a lot less than they would in the East. I had an apartment where I payed $350 per month with a $50 dollar deposit. All utilities were included other than my phone. My daughter has 3 bedroom town house for $550 per month. You just cannot get that in the East. Apartments here can start at $1200 per month just for a one bedroom. I have seen ads for apartments as high as $2500 for a two bedroom if not higher. No wonder people have to work so hard here.
Weather
The weather is not much different from the East to the Midwest. It can get a little hotter in the summer and little colder in the winter. Its really just not that important. You just take away the ocean that you won't have in the Midwest.
Taxes
Taxes on property are much lower in the Midwest. You will pay more for license plates than you do in the East but auto insurance is a lot cheaper. There is sales tax on clothing that you don't have here. Overall you pay much less in taxes in the Midwest than you would pay here.
In conclusion, living in the Midwest makes a whole lot more sense than working yourself to death in the East.

Post a CommentVery true. NJ is very expensive. Sometimes I look at real estate ads in other areas of the country and find the low prices unbelievable!
