Michelle Knudson
It is crucial to know how to protect yourself from identity theft. An individual needs to be very careful about who he or she shares personal information. He or she needs to be aware of where that they disclose information about their identity such as to people or companies. You can educate yourself on six ways to help protect yourself from identity theft

Be wary of giving personal information to friends and family.

Be careful of giving out too much information to friends and in laws in the family. Be cautious not to mention your mothers maiden name before she got married. Be careful to not disclose your social security number along with your birth date since an individual can do a ton of damage.

Be wary of any people that ask specifically what bank you used to get financed for vehicle.

This is one of the questions usually asked when you obtain a credit report and often needed in order to obtain further information. People that usually want to obtain this information have bad intentions. It is possible for an individual with your birth certificate and social security number to obtain a dealership key to your vehicle in order to steal it.

Don't supply information online.

People can hack into a business website to obtain information on clients. Please don't make the mistake of submitting your information online no matter how secure it seems. Nothing on the internet is totally secure due to hackers and malfunctions within a database system.

Never use a cordless home phone.

People can use a scanner to pick up telephone conversations on cordless phones at homes. Individuals that like to spy can frequently obtain credit card numbers along with personal information when people order things over a cordless telephone. Make sure that you use a regular telephone on a land line so strangers can't hear your conversation through the air waves.

Monitor all incoming and outgoing mail.

Make sure to put all mail through a shredder. You also want to put credit cards through a shredder. Make sure to shred all checks. Tear up any canceled checks too to protect yourself even further from identity theft. Make sure to put all credit cards through the shredder too. Put old credit cards in the shredder that have been replaced. Put closed credit cards in the shredder too.

Monitor Mail

Make sure to put your mail into a slot box in a metal mailbox or give it the mail person direct. You don't want to risk the chance of someone stealing personal information out of the mail box. Some of the old mailboxes don't have a key and just have a flag. The newer systems have a metal box.
