6 Steps to Finding a Diet that Fits

Find a Diet with Enough Calories

Anything that calls for under 1200 calories per day is a diet that will make your body switch over into starvation mode. If your body thinks it is experiencing a famine, it will become very efficient at using the few calories it receives and store as much as possible away in fat cells. Within a few days, your metabolism will slow down to the point where you will need even fewer calories to survive. The worst part about a program like this is when you go back to normal eating after the diet. If your body has just been starved, it will take any and all calories it receives and sock them away for a starving day. That is when you gain back every ounce you lost and then some.

Find a Diet That Fits Your Lifestyle

If you want to go on a diet that requires you to cook each meal fresh at mealtime, you should reconsider if you have a job that requires you to eat out often. If you are considering a diet that requires you to eat six meals a day and you don't want to carry a cooler to work with you, reconsider.

Find a Diet with the Right Variety

A diet that allows all the celery and carrots that you like just doesn't work for a person who can't manage to choke down celery and carrots. A diet that allows all the steak and eggs you want simply won't work for a vegetarian. Find a diet that allows you to eat foods that you enjoy. Otherwise, you're likely to be a very cranky dieter indeed.

Find a Diet that Fits Your Budget

If you have a limited budget, choosing a diet that requires you to purchase expensive prepared foods or supplements could be a very big decision indeed. The diet may have worked for your neighbor but then again, she may have had the extra cash to spare. Be wary of any diet that requires you to sell it to your friends so that you can afford it. This could seriously add to your stress levels - not something you want to do while dieting!

Find a Diet with Support

If you have a supportive family that is willing to follow your diet with you, great! If you're like millions of Americans, somebody at home wants to continue eating Twinkies and pizza. If you're one of those people, you'll need a support group. Whether that support group takes the form of weekly meetings, a diet buddy to call when you're feeling weak or an online forum doesn't matter. What does matter is that you aren't doing it alone.

Find a Diet You Can Live With

When you consider a diet, ask yourself one question:

"Is it reasonable to believe that I could continue eating this way for the rest of my life?"

If the answer is "No", that diet doesn't fit.

Whatever diet you choose, taking care to select a diet that fits your particular lifestyle and needs is what will determine your ultimate success or failure.
