1. Moving around
Sometimes, a change can be a good thing. But often, change brings about uneasiness, instability, and the potential for things to go differently than expected. You can't avoid all change in life, but steer clear of looking to solve problems with big changes. A move to a new city or a new job can help some problems, but it may also exasperate feelings of worthlessness. So don't carry out a big change unless you have a good reason.
2. What other people think.
This is a big one. We all wonder what our friends and coworkers REALLY think about us. But here's a pearl of wisdom: it doesn't really matter. Dwelling on our reputation will only lead to worry, which can be a big problem where self esteem is concerned.
3. Feeling that everything is inevitable.
It can be nice to think that fate controls us, but believing in your ability to control your own destiny is empowering. Realize that you do have the ability to make a difference in your life. Don't succumb to feeling like you don't matter.
4. Getting stuck in a pattern of failure.
Bad things happen to good people sometimes. That's true. The trick to good self esteem is not letting this get to you. If you've had a streak of bad luck, forget about it. Let go of the past.
5. Comparing yourself to other people.
Most of the world doesn't look like the people on TV. Don't think you need to look that way either. It's hard to ignore the images we see on TV, especially when everyone seems to idolize movie stars. But realize you are not a movie star, you don't have millions of dollars to spend on accessories, and you care about more than your appearance.
6. Thinking the world is an evil place.
Yes, a lot of bad things happen. Realize that there are plenty of good things happening everyday in the world too, they just aren't talked about.
Self esteem is about understanding your own value. Having good self esteem means realizing your self worth. So avoid the things that will bring you down, go out there, and be happy!
