Buying new furniture tip #1 - Consider the size of the new pieces you purchase.
There are a lot of great pieces of furniture on the market today that are oversized, especially armchairs and coaches. It can be difficult to move these pieces through a traditional door opening, even if you have plenty of room in your home. If in doubt, it is always a good idea to measure. You might not want to end up with furniture that needs to go on a diet.
Buying new furniture tip #2 - Take other members of the household into consideration.
You don't just want to spring new furniture on your significant other. Make sure that he or she is part of the decision making process. Everyone's needs and wants should be taken into consideration, even the kids. That having been said, not everyone can get what he or she wants.
Buying new furniture tip #3 - Consider who will use the furniture the most.
Even though you will need to take into consideration everyone's opinion, unless it is for a bedroom, you will also need to take into consideration who will use the furniture the most. For example, purchasing a new recliner for your significant other might entail different considerations that purchasing one that you intend to use most often.
Buying new furniture tip #4 - How easy will it be to clean your new furniture?
Cleaning is also an area overlooked by new furniture buyers. You don't want to end up with a new living room set that is a nightmare to clean, especially if you have children and/or pets. You will also want to consider which fabrics and colors show dirt, hair, etc. the most. The structure of a couch, for example, will also help determine how easy it is to clean. For example, a couch with detachable back pillows is much harder to clean than others. It is also hard to get it to look right after awhile.
Buying new furniture tip #5 - Is there a better alternative than purchasing brand new furniture?
In some cases, it is easier and less expensive to just have your old furniture recovered. In addition, you might be able to get a solid piece of furniture at a garage sale or tag sale for a song. Then you can put a little money into the piece and have it refurbished and/or recovered. You will then end up with an entirely new piece with classic styling that cost you much less than purchasing a new piece. No matter what you decide to do, it is important to realize that brand new furniture is not the only option.
Buying new furniture tip #6 - Be clear on must-have features.
It is always a good idea to know exactly what you are looking for when you are shopping for a specific piece of furniture. For example, don't bother to look for couches without a hideaway bed if that is what you'd like. Know whether you are in the market for a sectional, a loveseat, a plain couch, or a sleeper sofa.
By keeping these tips in mind, you will be much less likely to suffer a case of buyer's remorse.
