6 Things to Keep in Mind when Remodeling a Kitchen

Jennifer Wagner

Making the decision to remodel the kitchen very exciting, but it can also be very stressful. There are so many decision to make, and fun appliances and gadgets to buy! It's hard to know where to start. Before you jump in and make important decisions for your new kitchen remodel, take a moment to read these essential kitchen remodel considerations. Know what options are available to you to make remodeling a kitchen less about stress and more about fun!

Layout - Above all else, a kitchen should be functional. Major appliance location is one very important factor to consider when remodeling a kitchen. For maximum efficiency all major appliances should be kept at a distance no further than 7' - 8' apart. This includes the dishwasher, refrigerator, and stove and oven unit. This is what is known as the working triangle. This type of kitchen layout maximizes efficiency and creates a smooth and useful kitchen design.

Cabinets - No kitchen remodel would be complete without new kitchen cabinetry. Aside from style and finish, one of the most critical kitchen remodel considerations in choosing cabinetry is cabinet height. Tall cabinets that reach ceiling height will help to maximize storage space, but may be difficult to access. Shorter cabinets will reduce storage space, but will offer space between the top of the cabinets and ceiling for display baskets, plants, and other cherished collectibles.

Storage - Maximize your kitchen space by adding space saving accessories to your new cabinets. Smart storage options include built-in spice racks and silverware trays, rollouts for pots and pans, drawer dividers, sink tilt trays, appliance hutches, rotating lazy susans, tiered storage shelves, and under cabinet shelving. These are all great space savers to include in your kitchen remodel, and they are fun to pick out and functional to use. Learn more about space saving cabinet accessories.

Lighting - The kitchen is one of the busiest rooms of the house, and it's important to include a functional lighting design when remodeling a kitchen. There should be a functional light source for general usage, tasks, as well as a dim light source for accent lighting at night. A combination of under counter lights, overhead lights, and recessed lighting can be used to give your kitchen remodel a beautiful lighting design. Learn more about the important of light layering.

Flooring - Flooring is also a very important factor to consider when remodeling your kitchen. There are so many beautiful options, it's hard to decide which one to select. Ceramic tile is one of the most popular choices in kitchen flooring as it is easy to install, affordable, and simple to maintain. Hardwood flooring looks great and is also simple to maintain and affordable. More expensive flooring options include marble tile, cork, granite, and slate.

Paint - After you have selected the essential elements in your new kitchen remodel, the final step will be to decide on a paint color. Be sure to select one that is durable, washable, and made specifically for kitchen use. Need help choosing the right paint color? Get our tips on the best virtual tools available online.
