6 Tips for Cutting Costs for New Mothers

Cut Your Costs of Raising a Baby

Raising a child is expensive, so saving money where you can is important. Here are a few simple ways to cut your costs when you have a new baby in the home.

1. Make Baby Food

Instead of buying costly jars of baby food, make your own instead. Blenders can be a good investment if you do not already own one, and second-hand is even better. When you cook supper for the rest of the family, set aside part of your meal. The baby's age will determine what items will go into the blender and made into baby food. Foods such as green beans, corn, potatoes, and other vegetables can be pureed for younger babies, while meat and pastas can be added for older ones.

2. Buy Cheap Diapers

If your child has allergic reactions to some brands, this tip may not apply. However, purchase the cheaper brand when possible. They may not be as useful for overnight or outings, as they may leak more than the pricey brands, but are great for sitting at home. Using them part-time will help cut down the monthly diaper cost.

3. Buy Reusable Wipes

While the initial cost of reusable cotton wipes may appear to be more, you will save money in the long run since they can be reused. You will also need to purchase a low-cost wet wipe solution. Or better yet, make your own. If you prefer not to wash them out when you have a dirty diaper, have regular the disposable wipes on hand, too.

4. Double Bath Time

If you have two or more children, it does not hurt to give them all baths at the same time, assuming they are young enough. Besides saving money on your water bill, the kids will enjoy splashing in the tub together, and you will save yourself time getting all the baths done in one shot.

5. Second-hand Clothes

Kids - especially babies - grow out of clothes fast. There really is no sense in buying brand new clothes all the time. Have a few sets of new clothes, although buy most from second-hand stores or garage sales. When they grow out of them, you can hold a garage sale yourself or donate them back to the second-hand store.

6. Breastfeed

It may not be physically possible for you to breastfeed your baby, and by no means should you feel badly if you cannot. However, formula can be expensive, and it is amazing what a newborn can eat. You may want to consider breastfeeding your baby for the first few months. Not only is it free, but you are also getting your child off to a wonderful start.

There are many additional ways to save money in general, such as buying with coupons and watching specials. The above list should help cut down your costs for just the baby, though, and help your overall budget.
