1. Consider major milestones.
Is that special someone turning 16 or 21, expecting a baby, planning on getting married, or starting a new job? If so, each milestone will provide you with lots of gift ideas. However, a word of caution: Ensure that the item you intend to give isn't something that the person already has or an item that another friend or relative intends to give. That could be embarrassing.
In addition, you will want to ensure that the item is solely for the recipient. For example, if a female friend is several months pregnant on her birthday, you may be tempted to give her items for the baby (even though that is the point if a baby shower). A better idea, however, is to purchase an item just for her that is intended to make her pregnancy more comfortable.
2. Take personal style into consideration.
Often people make the mistake of purchasing an item that is more along the line of his or her tastes rather than the recipient's taste. Even if you don't personally care for the taste of the person for whom you're searching for a gift, the gift will be much more meaningful if you take his or her taste into consideration.
3. Slyly determine needs.
You may not know exactly what that special someone needs for his or her birthday, but with a little detective work, you can give that special someone a present he or she could really use. One of the easiest ways to slyly determine this is to talk to someone who spends a good share of their day with him or her.
4. Get creative.
If you are still stuck for birthday gift ideas, it is time to get creative. Think about items that you've always wanted, but would never buy for yourself. There is a good chance that the person feels the same way, especially if the person is of the same sex.
5. Purchase accessories to a larger gift or toy.
If you happen to know that the person you are purchasing a gift for just purchased an expensive item, or will receive one for his or her birthday, why not buy accessories for it? Normally accessories come in a wide-range of price ranges, and people tend to forget about it.
6. Think of the favorite gifts you've received.
Often, if you just simply stop to think about the best gifts you've received, you can figure out exactly why you loved it so much. You can then search for a gift that will inspire the same feelings in someone else. However, keep in mind that the person you are purchasing the gift for might not have the same taste or interests as you.
With a little thought and ingenuity, it isn't difficult to always give a thoughtful birthday gift. Hopefully these tips will put you in the right direction.
