6 Tips to Make Your Golf Vacation More Fun

Meg Adamik
Summer is almost everyone's favorite vacation time. If you're a golfer, it's probably also the best time to get away. If you're planning on playing during your vacation - and especially if your vacation is specifically for golfing - here are a few tips to make your trip more enjoyable.

1. If your vacation is specifically for golfing, pick the course you want to play on first. Then look for accommodations nearby. (This rule may not apply if you're traveling with non-golfers; see tip #4.)

2. Whether you're booking online or through a travel agent, try to get a "package deal." You can always just arrange to stay near a course. But the best option is to get a package that includes hotel reservations, the rights to play at the course, and possibly also club rental (if you need it). Not only will this be more convenient, but you'll probably save money as well.

And speaking of money - if you're planning on playing at a course that's part of a resort, you may find it less expensive to stay somewhere nearby. However, you could also find your tee times restricted. If this is an issue, you may need to spend the extra cash and stay at the resort.

3. If you do book a package, check the "fine print." There may be restrictions, for example on dates you can arrive or leave, or even on dates you can use the course, that won't work with your travel plans. You may be able to make arrangements with fewer restrictions by paying a bit more. Or if your schedule is flexible it may be worthwhile to change your travel dates to fit the restrictions.

4. Keep your traveling companions in mind. If you're all avid golfers, and traveling just for the opportunity to play at a course you've always admired, this won't be a big problem. But if you're going with people who don't golf - for example, your family - make sure there are places to see and activities that they'll enjoy while you're golfing. This is especially important if you're traveling with children. And one other thing - it's great if you can all find different things that interest you, but make sure you spend some time together too.

5. If you take your own clubs, make sure they travel well. If you're flying you'll need to think about how to protect them during the flight, since they'll be in the baggage compartment along with everyone else's luggage. But even if you're not flying, it's a good idea to get a good quality bag to hold them. Golf clubs can be awkward to pack, and a bag will keep them from getting damaged.

6. Make time for other activities. This may be your only opportunity to golf as much as you like. But if you don't play much at home, you could easily overdo things when you're on vacation. If your muscles get sore take time out for a massage; if you're playing at a resort this should be easy to schedule. Even if you don't get sore, take a little time to enjoy the other amenities available. Remember, you're on vacation! There are lots of ways to enjoy yourself.

You've been waiting all year for the chance to golf on a special course, or to play as much as you want. Now that it's time to plan your trip, do everything you can to make it special. That way your golfing vacation will be one you'll remember for a long time - or at least until you can do it again next year!
