1) Research - This is one of the most important things to make sure you get a great interview. Research, research and research some more. Know your subject and know them well. Read anything and everything you can about them. If they have a new project they are working on or one that is coming up you want to know about it.
2) Don't Repeat - Don't repeat the same questions that have already been asked a zillion times. Nothing makes for a more boring interview than asking the same questions that have been covered over and over again. If you do ask a question that has been asked then put a twist on it to make it different and get a more detailed response. That is the purpose of researching.
3) Open Ended - Ask open ended question. An open ended question is one that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. Open ended questions require a detailed response. An example of an open ended question is "Can you tell me how you come up with the songs you write?" "What made you decide to take the role of Mary in the movie?" verses "Do you write the songs?" "You play Mary in the movie don't you?" If they can answer short and sweet they will so do your best to get a detailed response.
4) Record - Make sure to record your interview. There is no way you can remember every word someone tells you in an interview much less quote what they said correctly. You do not want to print something that is not true. Make sure to record so you can go back and listen and print exactly what they said. Another good thing about having a recording is if for someone reason in the future they said I did not say that you have proof that yes they did.
5) Be Respectful - You have just been given an opportunity to interview someone who has a busy career and making time for interviews is sometimes difficult but yet they have given you a few minutes to speak with them. Yes you are giving them publicity but they can get that by many people. Be respectful to them and thank them for their time. If they say something and then they say "I didn't mean to say it like that let me rephrase" or "Please don't print that?" Be respectful and follow their request. You might just want to speak to them again in the future don't burn your bridges. Even if you don't like the person you are interviewing don't try and get dirt on them. There are people who do like them and they will not appreciate you wasting the opportunity you were given by talking about stuff that is no one's business in the first place. Yes tabloids sell but they are not respected or believed so why waste everyone's times by trying to be in that league of so-called journalism.
6) Contact - After you have published your piece contact the publicist and send them the information to where they can read the finished piece. Thank them again for giving you the opportunity to interview the person.
