6 Tips for Hiring a Vinyl Siding Contractor

Eric Brennan

Vinyl is final-at least that's the saying that many vinyl siding contractors have about vinyl siding. Once you put it up; it lasts for many years. That's because of what it's made from Poly-vinyl chloride or PVC. That makes it virtually maintenance free and resistant to even the most extreme weather conditions. Since siding is such an important part of your structure, it makes sense to hire a company that's going to do the job right, with the right materials and at the best price. Use these six tips for hiring a vinyl siding contractor and you'll be sure to get the most out of your vinyl siding investment.

  • · Go Local- The closer the company, the cheaper the vinyl siding prices tend to be because they don't have as far to drive to the job or to get materials. Hiring a local contractor also gives you an inside edge when it comes to local building codes and installation methods that outsiders might not know.
  • · References- Always get at least three contactable references before getting a bid from your prospective vinyl installer. Check the references by phone call, email, letter or pony express-just contact them and visit the site to ensure that the work is up to your standards.
  • · Proper licensing- Depending on your local and state municipalities, a license may be required to install vinyl siding. Always call your local building department to find out if you need a permit and if the installer needs a license.
  • · Getting Multiple Bids- Getting multiple bids ensures that bids from other contractors match up. If you receive several bids from one person that's really low, it could be sign that they are leaving out important details.
  • · Choosing a Bid- Never choose the lowest bid! While it's no fun to overpay for work, it might be best to go with a higher bid. This might be because they are including important parts to your project you didn't know you needed-or it might not. Always ask for a cost breakdown list from each bidder to ensure that you know apples from oranges.
  • · Agreements and Warrantees- Knowing exactly what warrantees and guarantees your vinyl siding installer provides for your project is a must have before you agree to the project. Always get any guarantees or warrantees in writing, signed by both you and the installer. Some vinyl siding suppliers provide guarantees on their work and their materials. It might be in your best interests to hire a supplier for the warranty. This way, if some damage occurs, they replace it out of their pocket and not yours.
