6 Tips on How to Have More Fun While Surfing

Being Prepared Lets You Relax and Have a Good Time

Rik Rodriguez
Several of my friends have had to remind me a few times that the main idea behind surfing is to have fun. To me catching and riding waves can be a lot of fun but if you are not catching as many waves as you think you should be or if you cannot do the maneuvers that you want to do, then it may be time to try to analyze your whole game plan when it comes to surfing. I have had to do this so many times, either because I wanted to catch more waves or maybe I just couldn't get enough speed to pull off one of the maneuvers that I was trying to practice.

For what ever reason I have always wanted to continue to improve my surfing experience. To me it's about catching waves, but it's also about enjoying the beach and the water. I go for the entire experience, but if you aren't catching waves and not getting any injuries you aren't doing to bad.

Many times in the last 30 years I have had to try different things to reach my goals in surfing. During the 90's I surfed the Great Lakes. Becoming unsatisfied with the surfboard selection out there I shaped and glassed a surfboard that worked just the way I wanted it to, but it still took me a while to figure out what I should do to reach my goal. Which was to catch more waves in a shorter time. With the Great Lakes being pretty cold year round, you only have a limited time to catch your waves before you turn purple.

No matter where you surf the main idea is to have a good time and have fun. Here are 6 things I recommend to do so that you can have more fun while you are surfing...

#1. Come to the beach prepared.

#2. Know the surf break, be aware of the surf direction, tide, wind direction, etc.

#3. Have the proper surfboard to surf the type of wave that you are going to be surfing.

#4. Always respect the local surfers even if they are incorrect. This saves a lot of problems in the long run.

#5. Don't drop in on other surfers. If you accidentally do, pull off the wave.

#6. If you can't get along with the general crowd for one reason or another, look for a different break or choose a different time of day or even a different day to surf.

Having more fun surfing is really common sense. Most people come to the beach to relax and have a good time, remember being prepared is a big part of being able to relax and have that good time.
