Establish a presence on Facebook.
The problem that most people have who are entering the Internet world in mid-life is that they are not good at building their Facebook account to a decent level. Using Facebook to keep in contact with fifteen or twenty friends is nice, but it will not give you the platform to benefit your business. To have a presence on Facebook, you will need at least hundreds of friends.
Build your friend list naturally or Facebook may block your efforts.
People have a temptation to just invite everyone that they see on Facebook to be their friend. However, if too many friend requests are sent to quickly, Facebook will flag your account for abuse. The same is true if too many of your friend requests receive no response or are ignored. Try to stick with friends and acquaintances. You do not have to have 5,000 friends within a day or two. Make building your friend list an ongoing project.
Find excuses to list your site on your Facebook wall.
If you change your site, announce it to your community with the URL easily identified. The same is true when you add new content or products. Invite friends to take a peek at what is new. Keep the web address listed on your profile so that those who are checking you out will see it. Ask several of your close friends to promote your web address on their account, too.
Promote new products and sales for a week or so before they are available.
This will get visitors used to checking on your website regularly. Even if the event is a week off, many people will slip over and have a look ahead of time. You might make a sale or get someone to click on an ad even before you planned. If it turns out to be several someones who head over early, good for you.
If your website is set up to allow feeds, make Facebook a feed from your site
You can do this by clicking a button on some sites when you want a particular item to post. It will not take long before friends will begin to comment or "like" the posts. When this happens, the post is shown on their wall. This will make it visible to their entire friend list. A word of caution is needed. If this happens too often, some of your friends will mark your feed as a "hide." Your feed will not appear at all on their wall. So, the key is to promote, but do not get too carried away. Some of your marginal "friends" will drop you from their friend list if this become annoying to them.
Set up your website as a group.
Groups are not limited to 5,000 friends. By setting it up as a group, those who really want to know what is going on will join the group. You can send out invitations from the group to ask others to join the group. This can be done every week or so to build up the group. Make the group site as interesting as possible with news, pictures, and video. Make sure that your website address is prominent in many places on the group wall and profile..
