While for many people the holidays are a great time of comfort and cheer, but for others who have to spend them alone, they can be a sad time where one can feel lost and sad. There are ways to help cope. Here is a look at some tips to help survive the holidays solo.

1. Stay busy. This is extremely important in helping one be able to survive the holidays while being alone. No matter what your circumstances are try and do something. If you have the opportunity offer to work an extra shift at work. Not only are likely to get specially holiday pay but you will be giving someone else an opportunity to stay at home with their family and you will get to stay busy.

2. Pamper yourself. If working on this day is not an option do something during this day that you especially enjoy. Soak in a bubble bath for a long time, play a favorite online game or video game or read a book you have been saving for when you have an extra moment.

3. Go out! Look for a list of restaurants that are open and head out to see a movie. Many movie theaters are open during the later afternoon hours. Take the opportunity to enjoy a meal you do not have to cook and a good movie.

4. Take the time to reconnect. If there are family members or friends you have not talked to in a long period of time take this chance to call them up and see how they are doing. The holidays are a great time of year to call those you care about and check up on them.

5. Volunteer your time. This is probably the most important way to survive the holiday solo. Many people find themselves easily slipping into a depression because they are alone. One way to chase the blues away is to help those who are less fortunate than yourself. Head out to a local children's hospital and volunteer to help out there or go see some elderly people in a nearby nursing home. Chances are some of them are spending the holiday alone as well. This will keep you busy and keep your mind off of yourself.

6. Lastly get away! If you have the opportunity to do so try and go away on a small vacation. Even if it is only for a few days you can get a nice, peaceful vacation and enjoy the holiday being in your own company.
