With a Little Creativity, You Can Make These Areas Functional and Attractive

Mrs.Gossett
We all have them - Storage areas in our home that we would like to be more aesthetically pleasing. What many people do not realize is that there are as many decorating ideas as there are storage areas to cover!

USE THESE IDEAS TO MAKEOVER AND YOUR STORAGE AREAS

1) PURCHASE STORAGE UNITS WITH DESIGN IN MIND

Why let the area be unattractive to begin with? With all of the built ins available these days, even bookshelves can look chic. There is a large variety of lovely armories and cabinets that will hold your items beautifully! You can also purchase the large wall units that house your T.V. and other media items.

2) THINK OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND!

You can use easy to hide everyday storage areas! You can store out of season clothes in wardrobe boxes and slide them under the bed. Place a bed skirt over them and no one will ever be the wiser. You can also use plastic stackables and simply keep them in an unused closet.

3) SCREEN YOUR STORAGE

A lovely divider screen can easily be used to hide any unattractive area of your home. They can be very versatile and make getting to the hidden storage very easily accessible. This technique can also section off a whole area of a room that you would rather keep more private.

4) BASKETS MAKE LOVELY STORAGE BINS

You can easily line baskets with your favorite fabric and use them to store items. They look lovely by themselves, but can also be used to live up on shelves for a pulled together look. I prefer to use these as toy boxes. It allows you to coordinate the fabric of you child's room and gives an elegant alternative to primary colored plastic. They also are easily accessible by tiny hands!

5) UTILIZE NEW FURNITURE DESIGNED WITH STORAGE IN MIND

There are so many new alternatives to regular furniture that have emerged in the design industry over the last year or two. Ottomans with build in shelves and compartments have never been more popular. Beds with built in storage are great in children's rooms. If storage is a major concern in your home, do not let anything in unless it has a door, drawer, or shelf.

6) WHEN YOU NEED TO COVER, DO IT IN STYLE!

There will be times when you really just need to cover a particular area. My advice would be to purchase a dressy curtain rod, (tension rod may be needed) and a gorgeous set of curtains. You always want these techniques to look like they were done on purpose. If you add you personal flair, it will help you to make the undesirable area inconspicuous!

I loved your sound advice for controlling clutter, especially the part about not letting any piece of furniture into the house unless it has a door, drawer, or shelf." (^;^)
