6 Ways to Be Smarter Than a 5th Grader

Stephanie Modkins
The TV show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader has demonstrated to millions of American adults how much they lack in education. Some how, as time passes, a relatively intelligent person can become dull. Avoid falling into this trap. You can hold onto a few extra brain cells as you age by doing 6 key things. Do:

1. Read books.
Oprah and other successful people swear by them. Classic tales like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer can provide you information about social issues, geography and religion. By reading books on a regular basis, you expand your mind.

2. Watch news shows.
As you soak in the Jersey Shore and other entertainment shows, take in a few news broadcasts like CNN. This type of television will help you be smarter than a 5th grader because you get current information on politics and science. You get details about life that help you understand what's really going on in the world.

3. Help with homework.
Don't be the kind of parent that shies away from helping your child with homework. By sitting down with your little one, you not only show your support, but also rev up your brain. You get to remember what you learned in school and learn what you didn't through the process.

4. Work crossword puzzles.
Did you know the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) promotes a crossword puzzle on their Website? This group understands that this type of word game stimulates the brain and keeps people alert. Be smarter than a 5th grader by jumping on the bandwagon and working crossword puzzles on a regular basis.

5. Study your genealogy.
Want to know more about how your family immigrated to America? Study your genealogy. Find out where you came from and why. In the process, you will increase your knowledge of history and culture. You might be surprised who you find in your family's past.

6. Befriend a total stranger.
If you have been hanging with the same people for the last decade, be smarter than a 5th grader by socializing with someone new. By befriending someone outside of your inner circle, you get an opportunity to engage in different activities and hobbies. You get to rethink how you have fun and relate to other people.

See how you can boost your mental stature? Try incorporating these 6 things into your life and you will rival any 5th grader you meet in intelligence.
