Her motto of 50 by 60 has just been accomplished by this 60 year old New York grandma. Finishing her 50th marathon run in Anchorage, Alaska, her children waiting at the finish line, Gloria Linares has now fulfilled this lifelong dream of hers.
After fleeing an abusive marriage 30 years ago in Columbia, Linares came to the United States. This mother of four and grandmother of six is described as a born runner by her family. She ran her first race to win a bottle of coca-cola back in her childhood days. She won that race, and hasn't stopped running since.
After fulfilling her US goal of 50 marathons by age 60, you'd think she was ready to put away the running shoes, but this granny is not ready to stop by any means. She now has a new goal of running on all 7 continents. Antarctica in 2015 is where she's planning her next marathon run and the chances are pretty good that she'll be there, I'd say.
At the Anchorage, Alaska marathon, the retired 5' 1" manicurist, got a special boost when her 4 children all flew in to surprise her and run part of the race with her. Her daughter recalls how her mother would wake up at the crack of dawn and run around the school track with 4 kids right behind her. That's very similar to what she experienced in Anchorage when they all showed up at that race to run with her.
This 60 year old grandma from Great Neck, N.Y. ran her first official race back in 1978 when she ran in the New York City Marathon. Her passion has always been racing with the wind, she said. A proper diet to help keep her healthy, along with a positive attitude has certainly helped this gal to be able to successfully pursue her lifetime passion of running, I'd guess.
