6267 Fall Fashion Collection

6267 is a young label that still does not have much exposure. After really only getting some recognition in Fall 2007, they followed with a Spring 2008 and a Fall 2008 collection. And unfortunately, since we're into 2009, it's a problem that we haven't seen anything new from them recently. But I think it's easy to understand why once you look at some of the trends going on right now. Here's my thoughts on their 2008 Fall Collection, and why they may not make it big for a few more years- and it has nothing to do with the beauty of their pieces!

In their Fall 2007 collection, 6267 had some of the most beautiful pieces on the runway. They weren't the breathtaking works of art that someone like Christian LaCroix creates, but they were solidly and consistently beautiful, without a single outfit being a misstep. That being said, they were all paired with silly looking black hats. Designers often do this because it makes them more memorable, even throughout the seasons. They know how many pieces a fashion writer must see each season, and realize that the best way to stand out is by doing something wacky. Twigs in the hair, or false, bushy eyebrows- anything to get attention. The problem with these hats is that they weren't memorable enough to really stand out, and they were just memorable to negatively influence the overall look. Thankfully, they ditched the gimmicks by their Spring collection, and also left them out of the Fall 2008 collection.

6267 tends to focus their Fall collections around monochromatic colors. You've got black, white, and variations on it. In fact, in their latest Fall collection, there are only two outfits which get even close to breaking outside of the black and white color scheme, and it's with a very pale shade of blush (which for all intents and purposes still falls under the white category). The collection itself plays with a lot of geometric patterns, and the architecture of a garment. On one outfit in particular, they fold the fabric gracefully to create a bow-like look, without tying the fabric in any way. The high waistlines are also very strongly architectural, since a woman's natural waistline is much higher than her bellybutton, where most of the lower end design labels insist on placing it. The problem with 6267 is never that the clothes are not beautiful. You could wear any garment, and not worry about it being too risky of a look.

But there is one serious problem with 6267. They just aren't with the times. Currently, we have a First Lady whose fashion sense is being talked about throughout the world. Other nations such as France, being the fashion capital of the world, also have strongly individual fashionistas who are married to the men in charge. And these women are inspiring those of us who do not live in the White House to take a few more risks with our own clothing choices. While this is amazing news for the world of fashion and will spark changes for many years to come, it is horribly news for 6267. Michelle Obama is fond of color. Even when she does black and white, it's a bold choice. She's fond of sartorial risks. 6267 does not have color in this collection. They are not risky, but classic. And while that's fantastic for those who dress in a classic manner, the truth is, we are in a time of change, and people are wanting to take more risks.

This is the main worry I have over this label. They do what they do very well. But it's not right for the times. And I fear that's why we haven't seen anything more recent from them. If they are going to stay relevant, they are going to need to throw out the old ideas and try something different. The best thing they could do for themselves is during their next fall season preparations- pretend it's spring. Inject it with some of the beautiful jeweltones they've used in their spring collection. Grab some fabrics from three months ago, and build an outfit around that. Giving it a little color and boldness could do nothing but help their label right now. And if the past is any indication, they have the talent to succeed. They just need the creativity.
