"Modern Family" and "Glee" were the big comedy winners leading the awards ceremony. "Breaking Bad" led the drama category. The Emmy voters made sure to spread the awards around evenly for the remaining categories.
A prevailing theme that seemed to be revisited was Hollywood's support of gay and lesbian actors and actresses. Presenters Matthew Perry and Lauren Graham performed a small bit, joking about Perry playing another gay role. The joke flopped, of course, and the presentation continued.
The big winner of the evening, though, was the movie "Temple Grandin," with numerous awards like Supporting and Leading Actress, as well as a statue for Directing and Made for TV Movie. This movie, an advocate for autism, proved to be a real messenger of awareness and hope, demonstrating the heart of Hollywood. All of the cast members seemed to be committed to educating people about autism and what people can do when facing this challenge.
George Clooney received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his work around the world, such as Hope For Haiti Now. In a self-deprecating manner, Clooney accepted the award, hoping the audience would not make the award more important than necessary.
It is apparent that the clear winner for the evening was "Temple Grandin," as the movie was so well-written, directed, and performed by such as dedicated group. The actresses were truly outstanding in their performances.
The performance of Claire Danes was remarkably researched, as Dr. Temple Grandin's behavior and mannerisms seem to have been portrayed exceedingly well. The immersion of Danes into her character was convincing as she related the struggles Grandin experienced as a child learning about her strengths and areas for improvement. Dane also portrayed Grandin's exploration into animal sciences and the humane treatment of animals.
Danes has had a busy and decorated career; with this new recognition, she should soon see more significant roles in the near future. Although following a performance like her role in "Temple Grandin" will be challenging.
The 2010 Emmys were somewhat predictable and at times boring. Fallon carried the tempo as best he could, but the nature of award ceremonies tended to creep along. Fallon ended the show by spraying champagne from a bottle, which seemed to go unnoticed by most of the audience.
