This year at the Golden Globes, Helen Mirren topped the women categories with three nominations. She was nominated for two different categories, however she was competing against herself in the category of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television," for her roles in Elizabeth I and Prime Suspect: The Final Act.

She also received a nomination for The Queen in the category of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama." Mirren won for each category, first for Elizabeth I. She began her speech, "Oh my Lord. Elizabeth I would have an amazing speech. ... I have nothing to say except thank you very much." She then stated about Elizabeth Windsor upon her win for The Queen, "I think you fell in love with her, not with me."

Next in line for number of nominations were Annette Bening (with nominations for Mrs. Harris and Running With Scissors), Emily Blunt (for her roles in Gideon's Daughter and The Devil Wears Prada), and Toni Collette (for Little Miss Sunshine and Tsunami, The Aftermath). Blunt was the only one of the three who received the Golden Globe for Gideon's Daughter in the category of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television."

Early in the night, Kyra Sedgwick won "Best Actress in a TV Drama" for The Closer. This was her fourth nomination at the Golden Globes. In presenting the award, Tina Fey introduced the winner as the person in television who was the most "not funny." Sedgwick embraced this in her speech, by saying, "I'm definitely not going to be even remotely funny." She also stated that she was in complete shock, and ended her speech by commenting, "I've actually made Jack Nicholson laugh."

Rounding out the TV categories was America Ferrara, winning "Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Comedy" for her title role Ugly Betty. She began her speech still out of breath for Ugly Betty's first Golden Globe, stating, "I'm so sorry. I'm such a mess right now." She then went to say how she is honored to be able to play the role of Betty because of its societal importance.

The best speech of the night went to Meryl Streep, upon her acceptance of the Golden Globe for The Devil Wears Prada, in the category of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy." Within her speech, she had the following to say, "I'm really thrilled. I think I've worked with everybody in the room." Then, to honor the other women nominated, "This has been such a fun year to watch movies because of you gals." To end her speech, she had a message for the viewers who were unable to find movie theatres that were showing some of the films nominated, "Go down to your theatre manager and ask them why. It's amazing how much you can get if you quietly, politely, and authoritatively demand it."
