655 Words that Search Engines and Semantic Indexing Usually Ignore

Tsu Dho Nimh
Of course, it's impossible to write without using these words. They are the glue that holds a sentence together. They provide cues to the reader about the relationships between ideas. However, make sure that you are not using more of them in your text than you need, because writing is like woodworking, too much glue weakens the construction.

The disclaimer:
This is not an official list from any search engine or latent semantic indexing project. This is a compilation of several publically available "stop lists" I found while researching natural language processing and latent semantic indexing.

These words will be used during a search if you enter them as a phrase or deliberately force the search engine to use them, but they are seldom used in a semantic index because they are too common or they have no meaning without the words they modify.

Hey this is great, worth a million dollars

  • Millie Green1/3/2011

Wow, thanks! I am thinking I have used a lot of these in titles, and I bet that is a good place not to use them. I tweeted this, btw, and have subscribed to your articles. Nice to meet you!

  • Darren Koobs12/5/2010

I'll be coming back to this list.

  • D L Petty11/24/2010

    Thanks for the list~~

  • Tsu Dho Nimh11/23/2010

    Yes ... it's stealthed.

  • T Drake11/23/2010

So this is a stealth article, being that it is almost entirely composed of words that search engines will ignore?

  • Patricia Cook9/15/2010

    That's a lot of words.

  • Theresa Wiza7/7/2010

Lyn Lomasi sent me to your page. I just bookmarked this article. Thank you for all your research!
