65th Annual Golden Globes Lack Substance and Style Due to Continuing Writers Strike

The 65th Annual Golden Globes, hosted yearly in Los Angeles, California lacked substance and style during its 1 hour television special, thanks to the Writers Strike which threatened to picket outside of the event if it wasn't cancelled.

Despite audience attendance ratings that had been declining the past 10 years, the annual Golden Globes were still popular among entertainment fans and movie goers throughout the country. The Golden Globes contain nominations and awards for actors and actresses in television shows and movies.

Instead of the annual show being done in front of a packed house of actors and actresses, the Golden Globes were forced to be transformed into a one hour news conference in which the nominees and awards were announced in each category. Instead of actors, actresses and their respective television shows and movies being the focus of the night's attention, the real story was the Writers Strike. Instead of actors and actresses making speeches on a stage and accepted their Golden Globe trophy, they were forced to be spectators along with the rest of us, watching on television.

The Writers Association had threatened to picket outside of the Golden Globes which would have caused a disturbance and media frenzy. Instead, the show was cancelled as the writers union continues to hold out for more money. The writers are intent on receiving a percentage of profits from internet sales of DVDs.

The Golden Globes usually generate millions of dollars for actors, writers and producers because it gives lesser known shows and movies great publicity by winning awards. Due to the cancellation of the normal live Golden Globes, these actors, writers and producers are sure to take a hit financially.

Among the movies and shows of lesser acclaim that won awards included "No Country for Old Men." The film, according to CNN, "features a killer tracking money in a crime cash who stumbles onto a drug deal gone bad." The film "LA Vie En Rose" is about the life of a French singer. HBO's Jeremy Piven finally won an award after three previous nominations for Best Supporting Actor in "Entourage." Johnny Depp and Sweeney Todd also took down awards, as the hit movie features a serial killer. The film has been a huge success at the box office as fans have been raving about Depp's performance as evidence by his Golden Globe Award.
